This fall, we introduced our #BlackLivesMatter #BlackStoriesMatter display which highlighted titles by Black authors. During Banned Book Week, we identified banned or challenged titles by attaching "Banned Book" ribbons on their covers.

Leeward CC Library's Challenged Book

While the books listed above have been banned or challenged elsewhere around the country, Leeward CC Library had it's own experience with censorship after adding the graphic novel, A child's life and other stories, to the General Collection!

A child's life and other stories book cover. Image is also linked to the book's item record in the library catalog.

On display September 28 - October 2

As part of a Banned Books Week activity/demonstration, you will NOT be able to borrow this book during the display period.

A child's life and other stories [New Window]
by Phoebe Gloeckner

General Collection
PN6727.G65 C45 2000

  • In 2004, a library in Stockton, California banned A child's life and other stories. The mayor of Stockton claimed the graphic novel was a "how-to-book" for pedophiles.
  • When Leeward CC Library acquired A child's life and other stories in 2011, a patron complained it was "pornographic", "filled with profane language", contained “sexually explicit" photos, and it was not suitable for young children visiting the library. In response to the challenge, the head librarian said:
    • The book was "highly acclaimed for it's candor and artistic merit, and it fits in with the many resources the library collects regarding domestic violence."
    • Minors are not permitted in the library without adult supervision.
    • The children and young adult books in the library's collections support Leeward Community College's teacher education programs.
    • You must be currently enrolled or employed in the University of Hawaiʻi system to check out library materials.
