Database Access Problems: Clearing Your Browser (Cache & Cookies)

Troubleshooting problems with accessing databases while off-campus.

Instructions

If while trying to access library databases from off-campus, you get a message that says something like "SSL connection error", "secure connection failed", or something like "This site can't provide a secure connection", and the URL in the address bar in your browser starts with "lccproxy.lib.hawaii.edu": follow these instructions to clear your browsing history. You might have to restart your browser or clear additional types of data.

Chrome Browser (Windows)

Update: Chrome also has a Clear browsing data option in the More Tools menu.

Internet Explorer Browser (Windows)

  1. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner, then choose Safety, then Delete Browsing History.
  2. Uncheck Preserve Favorites website data, and make sure both Temporary Internet Files and Cookies are checked.
  3. Click on the Delete button.

Opera Browser (Windows)

  1. Click on the Opera button in the upper left corner, and choose Settings.
  2. In Privacy & Security, click on the Clear Browsing Data button.
  3. Select Cookies and Cached Files and click on the Clear Browsing Data button.

Firefox Browser (Windows)

Macintosh Browsers

Safari

  1. Click on Safari at the left end of the menu bar, then choose Preferences.
  2. In Privacy, look for a Manage Website Data or Remove All Website Data button and click it.
  3. In the box that opens up, click on the button to remove the data.

Chrome

  1. Click on Chrome at the left end of the menu bar, then choose Clear Browsing Data.
  2. Select Cookies and Cached Files and click on the Clear Browsing Data button.

Firefox

  1. Click on Firefox at the left end of the menu bar, then choose Preferences.
  2. In Privacy, in the History section, click on clear all browsing history.
  3. Select Cookies and Cache and click on the Clear Now button.
