Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Searching for Items-Basic

Stay informed. Learn what GMOs are, what laws regulate them, and why this is an issue that you should be concerned about.

1: Understanding the Search Process

Voyager Basic Search interface

When conducting a basic search, you will see:

  1. A small search box
  2. "Search by" options
  3. "Quick Limit" options

2: "Search by:" options

"Search by:" indicates the type of search you want to do. This will depend on the information you have about the item you want. For example:

*A keyword search is best if you have no other information about the item.

*A title keyword search can be done if you know that your keywords are located somewhere in the title.

*If you know the exact title of the item, you can do a "title begins with" search. The title and spelling must be exact. If you are unsure, either check Amazon or do a partial title search.

Example: You only know the first couple words of the title. That's fine! If you're looking for "Facing Hawaii's Future" but only type in "Facing Hawaii", you will still be able to find the item. It's better to leave off the rest of the title and be safe, rather than sorry!

Important: If the title begins with an article (aan, & the, or for titles in Hawaiian, kakena, & he) omit it and enter the rest of the title. If you leave the article in the search, there will be no results!

Example: You are going to watch "The Fault in Our Stars" at the movie theater this weekend but want to read the book first. Do a "title begins with" search for "fault in our stars". Do not add the "The" to the search.

*If you know the name of the author, you can do an "author (last name first)" search. You do not need to add commas. Results will show multiple authors; you will have to search for the correct one.

Example: I want to find books by J.K. Rowling, so I search for "Rowling J.K.". This is the result page. After looking at the options, I know that I want the first author.

3: "Quick Limit:" options

Quick Limits set parameters for your search. The default limit is "Leeward CC: All Collections". Your other limits are:

  • Leeward CC: Print Collections – This searches for print items only.
  • 2008 And After – This searches for all recent items that were published in and after 2008.
  • Videorecording/DVD – This searches for VHS/DVD items located in all the UH-system libraries.
  • English language materials
  • All UH Libraries – No limit. Searches all materials in all the UH-system libraries.

Important: Quick Limit searches work only for keyword and title searches.

4: Filtering Search Results

When reviewing search results, you can filter them by opening the click-down menu on the right hand side of the page. There, you can choose to order results by date, author, or alphabetically.
